EMILE FORD
EXCERPT TAKEN FROM AN INTERVIEW WITH NORMAN JOPLIN
RECORD COLLECTOR |
When it came to prizes a guy from EMI was presenting them and I had to tell him “Give it to the guys who came second, you’ve already failed me in an audition”. Gerald Marks from Disc magazine, which sponsored the competition said “You’re not getting away with that, you won” and said he’d take me to another company. Les Cox, the talent scout from Pye was one of the judges, so Gerald and Les agreed on a one-record deal on Pye for me and Gerald said he’d give us a lot of publicity. Pye weren’t too interested because they were busy with David Macbeth, but Gerald did the job and we went in to do the recording.
The song they chose was “Don’t Tell Me Your Troubles” the Don Gibson song which Acuff-Rose were publicising. I had to rearrange it to my style and Pye brought in Michael Barclay to oversee the session. It took three hours to do that one song, then Barclay went out to lunch.
