EMILE FORD
EXCERPT TAKEN FROM AN INTERVIEW WITH NORMAN JOPLIN
RECORD COLLECTOR |
That’s when Adrian Kerridge and I did “What Do You Want To Make Those Eyes At Me For, two takes in fifteen minutes. I thought that song was fantastic when I first heard it. I’d heard the Johnny Otis version with Marie Adams and I liked their arrangement on “Ma He’s Making Eyes At Me” but thought all that screaming killed the song. So I figured I’d combine the song and the arrangement.
We’d been doing it live through ‘59 on the Mecca ballroom circuit and everybody loved it, so I knew the reaction—me and the boys believed in that song. When Barclay came back he said it was crap. But Les Cox liked it and took the tape to the pressing plant. Two weeks after release, it came in at No.12, kept climbing and on December 18th 1959 it was
No.1. <<<back
