EMILE FORD
EXCERPT TAKEN FROM AN INTERVIEW WITH NORMAN JOPLIN
RECORD COLLECTOR |
EMILE TIME
RECORD COLLECTOR: You cut your first record, the platinum-selling “What Do You Want To Make Those Eyes At Me For”, as a result of winning the talent contest at the Soho Fair in 1959. Was it really that simple?
EMILE FORD: In a way it was. The first category was pop and we had to go on first because I always use my own equipment, my “Sound”. When I saw how good the other acts were I was convinced we’d lost and started packing everything up. When the judging came along and it was 3-2-1—Emile Ford & The Checkmates, I couldn’t believe it.
