EMILE FORD

EXCERPT TAKEN FROM AN INTERVIEW WITH NORMAN JOPLIN
RECORD COLLECTOR

I was given the role of compiler, but I decided that before submitting the track listing, I’d try to locate Emile for his comments. Some sources suggested he’d moved to Sweden, or that he was in LA but several weeks later I was given the number of a recording studio in North London and there he was.

Emile was flattered by the project but explained that his recording and performing career was merely a small part of his life. He told me he was now running a successful sound equipment company in Los Angles and was in the UK to work on his unique pre-mastering technique. “What is pre-mastering I enquired?” “It means that I can make any record sound better”. “How do you do that?” “It is because I have synesthesia.” “Hmm...” Emile invited me to the studio with some CDs saying he’d show me what he meant. Alarm bells had not rung. I knew what synesthesia was. It means cross-sensory stimulation, including (in Emile’s case) seeing sounds as colours and patterns. It occurs in a small number of gifted individuals and is a scientifically and medically recognised phenomenon. It has mostly been utilised by painters who painted what they saw when listening to music. Emile has found a way of harnessing it commercially for musical purposes.
