EMILE FORD

EXCERPT TAKEN FROM AN INTERVIEW WITH NORMAN JOPLIN
RECORD COLLECTOR

Emile Ford’s hit-making career was meteoric: his first single “What Do You Want To Make Those Eyes At Me For” shot to No.1 at the end of 1959 and stayed there for six weeks. The songs retro rock’n’roll shuffle provided a welcome blast of confident sensuality amidst teen pin-up talent like Cliff Richard, Marty Wilde, Craig Douglas and Adam Faith who were dominating the charts. “...Make Those Eyes At Me For” was a record with a fine sound. Emile its producer and Adrian Kerridge, its engineer were both sonic obsessives who’d created a masterpiece and one that still remains the definitive version of a song that dates all the way back to 1919.

After just two years at the top during which time they’d issued a dozen or so singles, a clutch of hit EPs and three albums, Emile Ford and the Checkmates vanished leaving behind an under-rated legacy that is largely obscured by the “big hit”. Now Castle Communications are releasing a 25-track compilation that covers Emile’s classic era with the Pye/Piccadilly labels.
